This American Life Poultry Slam 2011

This American Life podcast this week had the best Turkey story ever, if you like stories that spiral totally out of control.

Thanks to J&H for the heads up.

I reserve the right to change

(notes)

I reserve and revere the right to change. Without it I would be long dead.

There have been lots of times, though, when a little less change and a little more spine would have helped. At least fiscally, physically, and physician-wise.

I reserve the right to change.

Bird on the Wire, Leonard Cohen

Bird on the Wire, Leonard Cohen

I heard tonight on KPFK 90.7 FM, Los Angeles, a show called Folk Scene. I long ago, began enjoying folk music as a way of jabbing the shit out of some friends of mine who insisted on playing hip hop, whenever they drove to the golf course. So, I found the most hillbilly shit I could find and played that when I was pilot.

The show I played was KPFK's Alive 'n Picking with Mary Katherine Aldin. She played a lot of twangy inbred shit, but there was also a thread of something magic. I became infected with a love of bluegrass.

Anyway, tonight I heard on Folk Scene a recorded show from 1977 that reminded me of what I had been missing since I loaded my Ipod up with all Katy Perry. One song that was played was a live version of Leonard Cohen's Bird on the Wire. I include one LC version here. GREAT apology lines, init.

#WeHoHalloween

Was asked if I was going to this year... As fun as it has been in the past, I think my 3 years in a row is plenty enough

Okay, Lenny: a couple of responses from your old math teacher:

1) Don't be such a cunt! You either suffer from memory loss or character impersonation disorder.

If you DID have a good time the last three years, then, what? Too much fun? Lemme tell you, from someone just returning from the cemetery: No Such Thing As Too Much Fun, and you are going to get old and or die someday, so use one of these trite phrases and shift gears. 'Make hay while the sun shines,' or 'he that goes aborrowin' goes asorrowin'...'

And if you didn't like it and were just going along in order to get along, get a candle and sit with it a while. You may be much less fun than you present. No big problem. You just can't claim to be a big fan of events like #WeHoHalloween and catch no shit. Your choice? Your curse?

2) I fergit.

Get to the goddamn party, Lenny, IN COSTUME, and with the knowledge that all we have is today.

Namaste, person

Great Shake Out Earthquake Drill Thursday Oct. 16, 2014 10:16 am PST

Great Shake Out Earthquake Drill Thursday Oct. 16, 2014 10:16 am PST

Here's one way to participate and help keep your family safe:

  • Download audio and video "drill broadcast" recordings to play during your drill (Video versions have text captions).Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Have your members  Drop to the ground, take Cover under a table or desk, and Hold On to it as if a major earthquake were happening (stay down for at least 60 seconds). Practice now so you will immediately protect yourself during earthquakes! (See this page for what to do if in bed, outside, driving, in a tall building, or other situations.)  For people with disabilities or access and functional needs, download our preparedness guide (661 KB) PDF.
  • While still under the table, or wherever you are, look around and imagine what would happen in a major earthquake. What would fall on you or others? What would be damaged? What would life be like after? What will you do before the actual earthquake happens to reduce losses and quickly recover?
  • (Optional) Practice what you will do after the shaking stops.

After your drill is complete, have discussions about what was learned and incorporate these lessons into your disaster plan.

FFL 2014

Well, we have completed another lap around the sun, and it is football time once again. And, though there are wars feared, trouble of every kind at home, and supplies are running low, this is what we attend to.

Yesterday's draft was uneventful, save apoplexy on the parts of the technically unfortunate, and ceaseless screams of abusive profanity from much of the rest of the league. Challenges were made, and lines drawn. There were squabbles. Some blood on the floor.

Time now for peace and bridge-rebuilding. As a league we need to come together and get back our real sense of community and closeness. With this intention I announce the 3rd annual Friendly Games, to be played at 9 hole Harbor Park G.C. sometime this Saturday. We've got four fivesomes cleared so there's even room for bench players.

Tentative groupings

(Please check spelling. Badges, T-shirts, hats, placecards, and media packs will use it.)

Arms dealers

Arms dealers

Let us again meditate on the words of Nick Cage, at the end of Lord of War:

"Though private arms dealers continue to thrive, the five largest arms suppliers are China, France, Russia, England, and the United States. They are also the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council."
Just sayin'...

There is still great music. Rock on

"There is still very great music. There is still fantastic tuneage. Wonderful freaks are making wonderful music right now and forever."
Sorry, you caught me in my new meditation. It is spawned from an ongoing conversation I have with everyone born after 1976, apologizing for the sh--ty music they are expected to get excited about and spend time and money on. And this crap: Adam Levine as "rock star."
I come from a bygone era, fersher, but I miss the days when rock stars were too fringe to be included in People's SMA listage. Ancillary benefit #2 to living in the past: No People magazine, at all.
Namaste, y'all. And remember that there was and is a time when producers and performers of great music didn't coddle up to big business and big media in order to develop their brand. Can you imagine Robert Plant getting this attention forty years ago? No, of course not. He would be out making music and pissing people off. Numbers one and two on any rockers To Do list.

Adam Levine has garnered the coveted title of People magazine's 2013 "Sexiest Man Alive." But for some, the news came as a bit of a shock and roused suggestions that other men are more fitting for the honor.

FRANK
You have so many of the qualities
we need more of these days.
Steve doesn’t know what to say.
FRANK
I just wish you weren’t doing this.
This hits Steve like a brick. He looks at Frank, perhaps to
say something... but is completely disarmed.
FRANK
You know, I used to work up at
some stables just north of here.
They used to have a poker game
every Friday night, the farm hands
and the stable boys. One of the
favorite stories in town was the
night I took 50 dollars from the
owner, Russ Clayborn. I had raised
him 20 dollars. And scared him
into folding a full house. That
was 2 weeks pay!
104
(MORE)I was 18 years old and I ran all
the way home holding three months
of our mortgage. I was so damn
proud. (Frank chuckles. Steve
smiles.) I ran into the house,
threw the money on the kitchen
table and told my mom I bet
everything on a pair of 3’s and
won.
Beat.

Beat.
FRANK
She took one look at the money...
and kicked me out of the house.
Had to stay at my aunt’s for a
week... When I asked her why she
just said “You could have lost”.
Beat. Steve looks over at Frank, but says nothing.
FRANK
In those days it was harder to find
a man that was willing to bet it
all.
Beat.
FRANK
We have nothing left to sell and we
can't afford to buy anything. You
came here to help us. Offer us
money... All we had to do to get it
was be willing to scorch the earth
under our feet.
Beat. Neither man says anything.
FRANK
Don’t get me wrong, Steve, I’m not
better than my neighbors -- hell, I
need the money too.
Beat.
FRANK
(Chuckles)
I guess I’m just lucky... lucky to
be old enough to have a shot at
dying with my dignity.
Beat. Frank heads inside. Turns at the door.
105-106
FRANK (CONT'D)FRANK
Let me know when you’re ready to
head back.
We hold on Steve’s face. Frank walks to the door. He
suddenly stops... and without turning back:
FRANK
I’m so worried for us, Steve...

WHAT IF VINNY IS GOD?

  • ...maybe I would have just as much pleasure listening to some other MLB announcer, in some OTHER city..#iNeedMyDodgers
  • You like this.
  • Douglas John Douglas God Bless, Vinny. I mean, it is a fine line. With this current VOLUME of clowny errorish stupid-excuse-for-baseball defensive errors, it is a contortionist's job to positivize the spin on the play-by-play. VS has hung in every pitch, and every weird moment, like the professional that he is and has always been. NOBODY could support their team (without looking simpering and stupid) with respect and zeal, and tenacity, and precision, and dedication, oh, godDAMN are we lucky to have this man for a little while more?!?!

Re: ...maybe I would have just as much pleasure listening to some other MLB announcer, in some OTHER city..#iNeedMyDodgers

Come on! Is it just me? Okay, I am the only one watching today's game now, on VHS. But Come On! How good is this match-up? How cool is it to be on one side or the other? This shit is G-R-E-A-T !

My work is a series of one-on-one interactive exhibits with no aim, but the goal of discovery. So is yours.

Today, for example.

Today, we share the experience of consideration and awareness of a human individual who lived among us and is now gone. Today you will have to work hard to avoid contact with Dr. Martin Luther King and his legacy. It is everywhere. Even in Arizona.

While he was here much of what happened to him was recorded, and many have judged him and found his life worthy.

Our children are taught about him, but what do they retain? And, like Phaedrus asked, "what is good, and what is not? Need we anyone to tell us this?"

Phaedrus was the guy who gave Socrates his poison, and that is all I know of him. Like Jesus, MLK, George Carlin, George Bush, George Washington, and hosts of others, I never met him, but the stories I have been told have shaped my mind and me.

Hopefully, much more later. Meanwhile, please consider listening to KPFK or KPFK.org.

Namaste.

While I was a student at my state school, I had lots and lots of epiphanies.

One was experienced almost daily: the "average student" and me had little in common. I was a middle-aged fat white man starved and hungry for knowledge, and "they" were, by and large, thirty year old women with kids and jobs.

George said he was a soldier so his son could keep shop, so HIS son could be an artist. Is that what has happened?

I am responding to a tweet referencing the "death of the college campus", and I agree that I have seen the same. My issue is location, location, location.

It is not just the campuses that have died--are dying--, but the society. And I have a bit to say about it.

++++++++++++++++++++

...still the scariest string of words I know: Revelation Thirty-Something: "...in the last days, knowledge will increase..." Actually, it is in Daniel, part of the Old Testament.

++++++++++++++++++++

Send me an email and I will have a reason to wrap up this thread.

I watched Dr. King speak in front of Lincoln, and felt the wrong.

When he said 'black children play with white children" I scoffed.

I was five.

...and in my little beating heart, I KNEW that I would never have black friends. That this "dream" of his was less than a hope, it was a joke. He had been propped up by communist sympathizers and was just stirring up a lot of passion that was going nowhere except maybe to kick up some trouble and burn some cars and buildings...

Are college campuses really dying?
